LLM SEO for Creators: How to Get Your Site Cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity in 2026

Here’s a number that should reorganize your entire content strategy: the overlap between top-ranking Google links and the sources AI actually cites has fallen from around 70% to under 20%.

Meaning: ranking well on Google no longer means getting cited by AI. They’ve become two different games with two different rulebooks. And roughly 60% of Google searches now end without a click at all, because the user got their answer from the AI summary at the top.

If you’re a creator with a site, you’re now competing for a slot inside the answer — not a position on a page. I ran this playbook across all three of my domains this year. Here’s the whole thing.

Step 1: Make Sure You Aren’t Blocking the AI Crawlers

Start here, because a shocking number of sites fail at this step and never find out.

Check your robots.txt. If you’re blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, or the other AI user agents, none of the rest of this matters. You’ve locked the door and hung a sign.

Then check your CDN. Cloudflare’s default AI bot blocking catches enormous numbers of sites by surprise — the site owner never touched robots.txt, but the CDN is rejecting AI crawler requests at the edge. If you’re on Cloudflare, go verify this specifically.

Same for any host-level bot protection. I audited and updated robots.txt across all three of my domains for exactly this reason. It took twenty minutes and it’s the highest-ROI twenty minutes in this entire post.

Step 2: Add an llms.txt File

An emerging convention: a plain-text file at your root that tells AI systems what your site is, what’s on it, and which pages matter. Think of it as a site map written for a reader instead of a crawler.

Keep it simple — site description, what you’re an authority on, links to your most important pages with one-line descriptions each. It’s low effort and the standard is gaining adoption fast.

Step 3: Schema Markup Is No Longer Optional

Structured data is how machines confirm what your content is rather than guessing. The types that matter most for creators:

• Article — on every blog post
• Organization — sitewide, establishes entity identity
• Person — ties your name to your expertise as a citable entity
• FAQ — extremely strong for direct-answer extraction
• HowTo — for any process content
• Breadcrumb — helps models understand site hierarchy

The Person schema is the one creators skip and shouldn’t. AI systems build entity graphs. If “Tegan Gaines” isn’t a defined entity connected to defined topics, I’m not a citable authority on anything — I’m just text on a page.

Step 4: Restructure How You Write

This is the part that actually changes your day-to-day, and it’s a real habit shift.

Traditional SEO writing builds toward the answer — context, setup, then payoff. LLM SEO inverts it. Models extract passages. A passage that leads with the answer is extractable; one that buries it under three paragraphs of throat-clearing is not.

The rules:

• Lead every section with a direct answer, then supply context underneath it
• One topic per section. Clean H1/H2/H3 hierarchy, no wandering
• Scannable formatting — bullets, numbered lists, short paragraphs
• Self-contained sections. Each one should make sense pulled out and quoted alone, because that’s exactly what will happen
• Server-side rendered content. If your text only appears after JavaScript runs, many crawlers never see it
• No paywalls or login gates on anything you want cited

Step 5: Publish Something Nobody Else Has

Here’s the strategic core, and it’s the one that separates creators who get cited from creators who don’t.

Original research, proprietary data, and first-person expert commentary attract citations. Rehashed general knowledge does not — the model already knows it and has no reason to attribute it to you.

If you publish a benchmark, a dataset, a framework built from your own experience, or numbers from your own operation, you become the only possible source for that claim. That’s a citation the model has no alternative to.

This is why I publish my actual RPM data instead of summarizing somebody else’s article about RPM. My 28-day performance breakdown exists nowhere else on the internet. Name your frameworks. Publish your numbers. Build the tools. That’s the whole citation strategy in six words.

Step 6: Build Tools, Not Just Posts

Utility pages get cited disproportionately, because when someone asks an AI “how do I calculate X,” a working calculator is a better answer than an article about calculating X.

Step 7: Actually Measure It

The gap here is enormous and it’s your opening: 43% of marketers say they’re optimizing for AI search, but only 14% are measuring whether they’re actually getting cited.

Start manual. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews the ten questions you most want to be the answer to. Log who gets cited. That’s your scoreboard.

Do that for three months and you’ll have better intuition about AI citation behavior than most agencies charging for it.

The Mistake to Avoid

Do not mass-produce AI-generated content to feed AI search. It’s the loop everyone’s reaching for and it fails, because these systems weight credible, original, editorial content. Generic generated text is exactly what they’re filtering against.

The irony is thick: the way to win at AI search is to publish things only a human with specific experience could have written.
